Meeting the needs of the pet industry

[Lexington, Kentucky] — How can nutrition balance the gut microbial population? Is obesity a problem for pets as much as for humans? Are food and behavior related? Alltech’s 23rd International Feed Industry Symposium will address these questions during an annual three-day event in Lexington, Kentucky, USA, from May 21-23, 2007. The Symposium provides an opportunity for international pet experts to discuss these impending issues and propose the most viable solutions that will advance animal feeding programs.

During the Symposium, Alltech’s pet session will look at the various concerns listed below:

  • Balancing the diet to maintain a balanced gut microbial population: Implications for health  - Dr. Juergen Zentek, Institute for Animal Nutrition, Germany
  • Obesity and age affect gene expression of adipose tissue - Dr. Kelly Swanson, University of Illinois, USA
  • Good food, good dog? Food and behavior: What properties are important?- Dr. Hendricks Wouter, University of Wageningen, The Netherlands
  • Convenience, enjoyment, and health: Parallels between marketing human and pet foods - Dr. Brian Nielson, Michigan State University, USA

Other speakers include Dr. Guy Werquin, Versele-Laga, Belgium; Dr. Christine Iben, Institute for Nutrtion, Austria; Dr. Barbara Kitchell, Michigan State University, USA, and Dr. Peter Surai, Alltech UK.

“Alltech’s Symposium will allow industry experts to come together to explore and present the latest research on areas such as GIT integrity and how nutrition can balance gut microbial population, companion bird nutrition, panel evaluations and how they are used to evaluate palatability and healthiness of foods, the role of Bio-Mos® and parallels between marketing human and petfoods,” said Dr. Jules Taylor-Pickard, Alltech’s European Technical Team Manager.

Species sessions will also be held in the areas of dairy, beef, poultry, pig, aqua, feed quality and regulation, and equine.

Alltech is the proud sponsor of the Alltech FEI World Equestrian Games 2010™ to be held in Kentucky, USA.
