Alltech, Transylvania University join forces for lecture series

[Lexington, Kentucky] — Did you know that cheap gas could translate into a global food shortage?  Could the food you eat determine whether or not you get cancer?  Is it possible to avoid the dreaded effects of aging?

All of these questions and more will be answered now that global animal health company Alltech and Transylvania University have teamed up to present a four-part lecture series called “Science Made Simple.”

The lectures, which will be held at Transylvania beginning on Tuesday, February 6, are open to the public and will feature four different speakers.  At the first lecture, Alltech president and founder Dr. Pearse Lyons will discuss the importance of ethanol as an alternative energy and fuel source.

The lecture series aims to help the general public — including students, families, and professionals — understand how science influences our everyday lives.  Each speaker will present his or her topic in an easy-to-understand format so that excitement and interest merge with education.  A question and answer session and reception will follow each lecture, providing an opportunity for the audience to interact with the various speakers.

All lectures will be held at Transylvania University’s Haggin Auditorium.  The dates and topics are as follows:

• Tuesday, February 6, 7:30 p.m.
“The competition for food, feed and fuel.  How will we feed ourselves and our animals in ten years?” – Dr. Pearse Lyons, president of Alltech

• Tuesday, March 6, 7:30 p.m.
“The science in your glass of beer, wine, or whiskey.” – Dr. Karl Dawson, director of worldwide research, Alltech

• Wednesday, April 25, 7:00 p.m.
“The fountain of youth: Does it really exist?” – Dr. Inge Russell, Heriot-Watt University, Edinburgh, Scotland

• Tuesday, May 8, 7:00 p.m.
“Feeding the gene for better health.” – Dr. Ronan Power, director of research, Alltech
