Alltech's 21st European Lecture Tour to explore effects of increased ethanol production
[Dunboyne, Ireland] — Alltech announces the details of its 21st annual European Lecture Tour (ELT) titled “Feed, food or fuel. Is ethanol production from corn taking food from our plate? The tour addresses one of the most topical issues currently affecting the animal feed industry. The extensive lecture tour will visit 39 countries in Europe and Africa/Middle East, beginning February 12 in Cork, Ireland, and concluding on March 23 in Casablanca, Morocco.
Dr. Pearse Lyons, president of Alltech, will discuss the current feed crisis facing the agri-business industry in his presentation “The road ahead.” Lyons will discuss the implications of how an increase in ethanol production will consume the grain resources that are necessary to feed our livestock on a global scale.
Dr. Karl Dawson, Alltech’s director of worldwide research, will discuss “Glycomics in livestock production systems: Defining new functional roles for carbohydrates.” Dawson will explain how carbohydrates are more than just an energy source, but also how they play a vital role in cellular metabolism, protein structure and function and host immunity. These advancements will provide new tools to help manipulate metabolism in all animal species.
Dr. Ronan Power, Alltech’s director of research, will explain the implications of “Selenium supplementation: A holstic approach to animal nutrition and performance.” Power will explain how selenium deficiency symptoms differ among species but the function of selenium in metabolism is essentially the same for all animals. However, it is through the use of nutrigenomics that future strategies will be developed for the prevention and treatment of diseases.
Steve Elliott, Sel-Plex® product champion, will examine “The selenium dilemma: What is the role for EU approved Sel-Plex?” Elliott will show how research suggests that selenium supplementation needs to be reviewed in order to achieve higher performance levels and increased health in animals. The best method of providing this supplement is through the addition of organic selenium — Sel-Plex — in the animal’s diet.
